V-OPD

The V-OPD is an occupant detection and classification system utilizing a single black-and-white camera module. A camera mounted in the vehicle captures low resolution images of the front-passenger seating area. The camera module is configured to ensure its ability to gather usable imagery, even in low-light or bright-light situations.

The output of the classifier is a seat occupancy classification: empty, adult, rear-facing infant seat, child/forward-facing infant seat, or safe state (indeterminate). The occupancy classification is then used as an input to the vehicle airbag controller. With the expert systems classification algorithm developed by IMS, the system learns how to recognize each occupancy class based on the extracted image features. These image features may consist of textures, contours, motion vectors, and other image features.

The V-OPD system extracts image features of each captured frame, and classifies the image, based on the occupant class with which it shares the most in common. The V-OPD system is capable of identifying subtle commonalities within an occupancy class that would be undetectable by the human eye. That is, the system is able to capture and learn robust quantitative methods for occupant detection/classification. Basic occupant classification can be performed with V-OPD and, when coupled with a complementary sensor, this technology may perform full occupant classification in compliance with FMVSS 208.
