OCS (Occupant Classification System)

Using IMS' proprietary Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS), strain gauges and intelligent software algorithms, the Occupant Classification Systems (OCS) classifies occupants based on their weight. The OCS provides real-time occupant classification information to the vehicle's Restraints Control Module (RCM). The RCM can use this classification information to optimize airbag deployment in order to reduce potential occupant injuries.

FMVSS 208 mandates that vehicle passenger airbags must deploy or be suppressed appropriately for different occupant classes including children and adults. The OCS is a safety system that meets the performance levels required by FMVSS 208.

The OCS is robust and capable of highly accurate classification performance, as evidenced by the graphs on the next page. These illustrate the IMS' OCS Sensor Performance under the following conditions:

  • in legal sitting positions for certification,
  • in legal sitting positions, and
  • in engineering evaluation positions.

Furthermore, the OCS has a compact and robust design that integrates well into seats.

IMS has signed a development agreement with a U.S. based Tier-1 supplier. Under this agreement, the Tier-1 supplier is funding the development and commercialization of the OCS.

Auto manufacturers in North America, Europe and Japan have shown considerable interest in the OCS. The OCS is undergoing rigorous in-vehicle performance evaluations and is expected to be available for integration in future model cars.
