A major European luxury car maker has recently selected Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Inc. (IMS) to provide their Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for use on one of its new 2006 models.
When a front-seat passenger is detected by IMS' SBR and the seatbelt buckle switch is not closed, a warning light and chime are activated reminding the passenger to buckle their seatbelt.
IMS' SBR sensor is based on capacitive technology that allows differentiation between animate and inanimate objects. As the only SBR system on the market able to make this distinction, annoying false detections are eliminated; the system is not fooled by bags of groceries, gym bags, or other items that might be placed on the seat.
Other applications for IMS' capacitive technology include: replacement of the traditional pressure-activated steering wheel horn switch; a per-user vehicle power management system (based on presence detection); a head tracking system used to detect occupant head position for dynamic airbag deployment as part of a solution to FMVSS 208 legislation.
