Dr. Otman Basir, President and CEO
Dr. Otman Basir is a world renowned expert in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), biologically inspired computing and their application in human machine interfacing, connected vehicles and intelligent transportation systems. It took a serious car accident involving his family, however, to inspire Dr. Basir to launch a company. Convinced that technology could make driving safer, he founded Intelligent Mechatronic Systems in 1999. The vision of the company – to bring purpose to every journey by enabling drivers to be safer, smarter and greener – has been the starting point for a host of products and services that improve the lives of many.
Dr. Basir’s academic background is extensive. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Tripoli University, Libya, a Masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Queen’s University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Dr. Basir is involved in teaching and mentorship at the University of Waterloo. He is the Founding Chair of Engineering Systems and Computing at the University of Guelph and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo.
Dr. Basir has authored/co-authored over 200 patents and patents pending and 400 scientific publications used for journals and conferences. He has won several prestigious awards for his work, including Leadership Award, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation award, the Premier of Ontario Excellence award and the University of Guelph Leadership award. He was a past nominee for the Manning Innovation Award and the Premier’s Catalyst Award. Dr. Basir is the Chairman of the Libya-North America Chamber of Commerce.
Jeoff Shiekh, Chief Corporate Officer
In his role as Chief Corporate Officer, Jeoff Shiekh is responsible for overseeing IMS’s Legal department and is instrumental in key negotiations with global partners and clients. He maintains a strong focus on developing relationships with customers and strategic partners, with a particular emphasis on advancing the commercial objectives of the company. As Corporate Secretary to the Board of Directors, he manages all aspects of Board affairs and is actively involved in all matters of corporate governance.
Jeoff is also responsible for managing the company’s intellectual property portfolio, the Human Resources department and works closely with Finance on investor relations and governance matters. He also collaborates with senior members of IMS to execute on the strategic direction of the company. Prior to joining IMS, Jeoff was Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at RAND, a TSX listed technology company. During his tenure at RAND, Jeoff played a key role in various areas, including managing the company’s mergers and acquisitions portfolio, overseeing the company’s legal department and leading negotiations in international commercial transactions. Jeoff was also instrumental in guiding RAND through a privatization process. Prior to joining RAND, Jeoff worked at the Attorney General’s office and as a Compliance Officer at Dundee Bancorp.
Jeoff holds a Juris Doctor degree in Law with a specialization in Business Transactions from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Jeoff also holds an Honours B.A. Double Major in Psychology and Mass Communications.

Brian Trnkus, Chief Financial Officer
As the Chief Financial Officer, Brian is a partner in delivering on the IMS vision through strategic financial leadership and proactive corporate involvement. The position has oversight of strategic and tactical planning, financial reporting and analysis, treasury, accounting and tax. In addition, Brian is the prime interface for investor relations and governance in conjunction with the IMS Legal team.
Brian is involved in the broader community as a Board member and Chair of the finance committee of ABC Life Literacy Canada and is a member of the Financial Executives International (FEI) membership committee for his regional chapter.
Brian’s career includes leadership positions in telecommunications at Nortel Networks, software at RAND Technologies and mining at IAMGOLD. In addition to positions in Canada, Brian has gained international experience working in Paris and New York.
Brian is a graduate of McGill University’s accountancy program, holds a Concordia University honours Commerce degree and is a certified public accountant (CPA, CA).

Ibrahim Mohamed, President, EMEA
As President of IMS, EMEA, Ibrahim Mohamed provides strategic direction and executive leadership in creating and growing IMS’ global market and footprint beyond North America. This entails establishing global strategic partnerships and alliances, providing leadership for IMS’ sales and business development activities, and developing and executing region specific product and marketing strategies.
In 2012, Ibrahim held a distinctive role with the Libyan Government as Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, helping set up ICT Regulatory framework, as Libya transitions to a stable democracy. Ibrahim obtained a Masters of Engineering (Electrical) from Wright State University, as well as an Executive MBA (Business Administration) from the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business. A superb bilingual communicator, Ibrahim acquired his extensive business proficiency leading teams for global technology companies including Qatar Telecom (Ooredoo), Motorola and AT&T Wireless.
In terms of a personal philosophy, Ibrahim believes that great customer relations are the foundation of a strong business. His belief is summed up in the following quote: “Companies can never outgrow the need to master the basics; those that think they can are doomed to fail. And one of the most critical fundamentals of any business is that the customer is the center of the universe.”
Steve Millstein, President, North America
In his role as President, North America, Steve is responsible for leading IMS’ future connected car growth strategies, with a focus on North America business development and sales, as well as the global OEM automaker strategy.
Steve has been a leading figure and influencer in the development of the connected car industry. He has successfully led a number of tech start-ups, including ATX Group where he held the position of CEO. ATX Group was the first connected car provider in the US and Europe and was acquired by Sirius XM in 2013. Most recently, Steve was Managing Director of Aeris, a Silicon Valley IoT provider, where he developed a disruptive business model and technology for auto OEMs.
When it comes to business success, Steve lives by and reinforces a famous quote, “The people who are crazy enough to think they change the world, are the ones who do.”
Blair Currie, Vice President, Business Development
Blair Currie is an experienced global marketing and business development leader, having held senior and international roles with Aegis Media (Japan and Korea), DDB (Japan), Fujitsu (Japan), McCann Erickson (Canada, Thailand, Hong Kong and Vietnam), Saatchi & Saatchi (Singapore), and TBWA (Japan and the UAE).
At IMS, Blair has led our marketing efforts, and now spearheads global business development and growth, as well as industry alliances. He is one of the industry’s leading speakers and writers on telematics and infotainment.
Blair holds an MBA in Marketing and International Business from the Rotman School of Business, as well as a Bachelor of Science, from the University of Toronto.
Mohamed Hamoodi, Vice President, Corporate Affairs
As Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Mohamed Hamoodi plays a key role at IMS in developing and executing strategic plans to achieve business objectives while establishing strong business networks. With more than 35 years experience in multiple disciplines, Mohamed has served both the private and public sectors in the Middle East, Europe and Canada. Prior to joining IMS, Mohamed led public and governmental affair efforts at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), where he collaborated with key stakeholders to build a network of external relationships, cooperation and partnerships. He also served as Vice President and Deputy Executive Director (Projects) at CIGI. Mohamed also serves as an Advisor to the Quantum Valley Investments, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Institute of Quantum Computing of Waterloo, Ontario.
In the past, Mohamed lent his many talents to Communitech, Agfa Canada, Primal and BlackBerry (Research in Motion).
Mohamed holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Mathematics, a Post graduate diploma in Applied Mathematics & Physics, and a Post graduate diploma in Business Administration.
Dr. Ben Miners, Vice President, Innovation
Dr. Ben Miners provides innovation leadership to guide next-generation solutions, strategic technology initiatives, and beneficial partnerships that deliver continuous value and high quality experiences far into the future. Innovation and emerging concepts are embraced and catalyzed across the connected vehicle ecosystem and beyond to define and realize solutions over the horizon. Untraveled paths are cleared to drive continuous innovation, realize increased value for all stakeholders, and exceed future expectations. Current activities and areas of interest include technology innovation evangelism, intelligent transportation systems, data intelligence and analytics to deliver enhanced contextually-relevant value and enable intelligent decisions, understanding human intent, and intuitive user-centric solutions.
Dr. Miners holds a Doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, a Master of Science from the University of Guelph, and is a licensed professional engineer.
He believes that the keys to unlocking revolutionary advancements lie along untraveled paths created through innovation, and is in agreement with Theodore Levitt’s observation, “Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.”
Doug Swanson, Vice President, Engineering
In his role as VP of Engineering, Doug Swanson is responsible for the technical infrastructure, architecture and all product development within IMS. With over 25 years of experience, Doug has a passion for leadership development, cross-functional partnering and operational effectiveness.
Doug has lead global product development organizations in Networking, Cloud Data Centers, Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Embedded systems development. Prior to joining IMS, Doug has had leadership roles in start-ups and large organizations. These include Nortel, Cisco, BlackBerry and Miovison. Doug holds a BASC in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

Michael McDonald, Vice President, Quality & Business Process Management
As the Vice President of Quality, Michael is responsible for defining and operationalizing corporate quality strategy and objectives company-wide to achieve business results. His responsibilities include all aspects of customer-driven quality, business process improvement across all functions, new product development, product improvement and compliance.
Michael has held leadership positions in several companies, including GE Healthcare where he served as the Director of Quality for Canada and was a member of the GE Healthcare Canada leadership team. Prior to GE Healthcare, Michael occupied senior positions at Deloitte Management Services LP, in the areas of Quality Policy and Measurement, Operational Excellence and Client Service.
Michael is a Business Process Improvement expert and holds a graduate certificate in statistical process control from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. He is also Lean Six Sigma Certified and a Lead Auditor/Assessor. Michael believes that processes should not be a barrier to success; instead, when properly defined and implemented they should enhance, simplify and streamline the way business is done. Overriding all is his belief that the ultimate measure of quality is delighted customers and when they speak we listen.
Ben Dailey, Vice President, US Sales
As Vice President, US Sales, Ben Dailey is responsible for evangelizing the IMS story, managing a team of US Enterprise Account Executives and growing the IMS portfolio of customers. Ben works closely with all IMS stakeholders to ensure customer success, influence product roadmap and development and make certain we uphold the highest standards of integrity in all of our client interactions.
A proven and experienced sales leader, Ben has spent more than fifteen years working within the insurance industry, managing accounts for high profile clients and helping insurers solve business problems. His specialties include large account sales and management, field sales, sales process and business development. Ben holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from the University of Northern Iowa. Before joining the IMS team, he gained valuable experience with industry leaders Vertafore and Thomson Reuters, where he continually won awards as the highest revenue producer in his field.
Ben’s high standards for client relationships and dedication to excellent service are summed up in his favorite Vince Lombardi quote: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”
Steve Coffey, Head of European Operations
In his role as Head of European Operations, Steve Coffey is responsible for developing deeper relationships with European customers and ensuring a visible presence of IMS within the European marketplace.
With over 25 years of sales and management experience, Steve brings to IMS a diverse range of experience in manufacturing, transportation, retail supply chain and financial services. Prior to joining IMS, Steve worked as Group Director of Operations for DriveStyle Insure (UK). Steve has also served in previous leadership roles in the USA, Europe and Asia, including: Vice-President of Strategic Relations at MicroEnsure (USA), Director of RFID for the EMEA & Indian Subcontinent at Avery Dennison (USA), Senior Director of Global RFID Product Development at Checkpoint Systems (USA), European Market Development Manager at Omron Corporation (Tokyo) and as an Engineering Officer in the British Royal Air Force.
Steve’s education includes a four year apprenticeship in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the British Royal Air Force Engineering College, in addition to management training from Henley Management College and Open University.
